How to Test and Adjust House Water Pressure Video

Some water pressure issues are small and easily remedied by the homeowner so, if you feel inclined, here are a few things to check before calling us when faced with low water pressure:

  • Is the water meter valve fully open? In most homes, there are two major shut-off valves to control water to the home. The first is the water meter valve which can be found street-side on your water meter. Normally, you would not use this valve as is technically belongs to the city or town and usually only utility workers handle it. If you have had recent work done to your home and/or plumbing system, check this valve first to ensure it is fully opened.
  • Is the main shut-off valve fully open? The second valve is the main shut-off valve and it is typically located on an outside wall where the main water line enters your home or it can be in the basement or garage-it is often where your water heater is located. Check that this valve is also fully open. As with the water meter valve, if you had recent repairs done to your home, the valve may have been left partially closed, causing a water pressure issue.
  • Is the pressure regulator failing? Most, but not all, home plumbing systems are equipped with a pressure regulator. The pressure regulator will control the input pressure in your plumbing system to a safe level that will not damage the pipes. If your pressure regulator fails, you will notice a sudden change in water pressure in your home. When this happens, it is best to call a professional to replace it.
  • Does your plumbing system need to be replaced? This is the most expensive and serious scenario when dealing with water pressure. In older homes, the pipes often become too corroded and filled with scale for water to run freely through any longer. Over years, pipes gradually accumulate buildup that if left untreated will close off water flow over time. If this is the case for your home, you likely noticed a gradual slowing of water pressure over time. Replacing your pipes is definitely a job suited for a licensed plumber.
